The Pursuit of the Perfect Fit

In July 2012, as excitement built for the London Olympics, RMA was invited to observe a Great Britain Wheelchair Rugby Team training session. During conversations with the athletes, we asked a simple question: “If you could change anything about your current chair, what would it be?”  Every single athlete said they would make changes, even though many of the chairs were brand new and had only been used for a few months. That moment highlighted a clear problem: if elite athletes weren’t getting the perfect fit, there had to be a better, more precise way to measure and build such a vital piece of equipment.

Beyond the Tape Measure

Our chairs are produced by utilising what we believe is the best measuring system available today. Although a tape measure is a great and simple tool, it has its limitations. When using a tape measure, the outcome will vary and will be influenced by the experience of the person who is doing the measuring. Also, even the most experienced fitting technician cannot give you an insight into how the chair will feel. Our Contour Body Mapping System does just that.

All athlete assessments and measurements are carried out at our dedicated facility in Bridgend, South Wales, where our team uses the Contour Body Mapping System to ensure the highest levels of accuracy, consistency, and comfort in every chair we produce.

Built With You, Adjusted By You

Unlike traditional fitting methods, our First Fit process utilises the Contour Body Mapping System, allowing you to experience your wheelchair in real time before it’s built. From seating position to wheel camber, adjustments can be made instantly so you can feel the difference and work with our specialists to achieve your ideal setup. This dynamic fitting process ensures that every aspect of the chair is refined and tailored to your individual needs before production begins.

Try, Adjust, Approve

As part of every made-to-measure sports or active wheelchair, RMA offers a unique second fitting service.

At this stage, the wheelchair is presented in a “tacked” format, allowing you to try it before completion and assess its fit and feel. Small adjustments can be made if required, ensuring the chair is tailored to your individual needs before final approval.

Once signed off, the wheelchair is completed and prepared for delivery. Including both fitting sessions, your made-to-measure wheelchair is typically delivered within 6–8 weeks.
