A BRIEF HISTORY

The Pursuit of the Perfect Fit

In July 2012, as excitement built for the London Olympics, RMA was invited to observe a Great Britain Wheelchair Rugby Team training session. During conversations with the athletes, we asked a simple question: “If you could change anything about your current chair, what would it be?” Every single athlete said they would make changes, even though many of the chairs were brand new and had only been used for a few months. That moment highlighted a clear problem: if elite athletes weren’t getting the perfect fit, there had to be a better, more precise way to measure and build such a vital piece of equipment.

In this day and age there must be a better, more accurate way to measure someone for such a critical piece of equipment.

From Vision to Innovation

We set out to create a system that would deliver accuracy to within 2mm while enabling users to experience how a chair would feel before placing an order. While body scanning and other existing technologies were considered, they would have made the final cost prohibitively expensive. Instead, we developed a solution that achieved everything we had set out to accomplish.

But the journey did not end there. Over time, customers began asking whether the system could provide different outcomes for different people. Their feedback and evolving requirements have continually driven its development, inspiring us to refine and expand its capabilities.

Today, we have a system that allows the customer a unique experience when ordering a chair, no matter if it is a wheelchair for sport or a wheelchair for everyday use.

Beyond the Tape Measure

Our chairs are produced by utilising what we believe is the best measuring system available today. Although a tape measure is a great and simple tool, it has its limitations. When using a tape measure, the outcome will vary and will be influenced by the experience of the person who is doing the measuring. Also, even the most experienced fitting technician cannot give you an insight into how the chair will feel. Our Contour Body Mapping System does just that.

All athlete assessments and measurements are carried out at our dedicated facility in Bridgend, South Wales, where our team uses the Contour Body Mapping System to ensure the highest levels of accuracy, consistency, and comfort in every chair we produce.

Built With You, Adjusted By You

Unlike traditional fitting methods, our First Fit process utilises the Contour Body Mapping System, allowing you to experience your wheelchair in real time before it’s built. From seating position to wheel camber, adjustments can be made instantly so you can feel the difference and work with our specialists to achieve your ideal setup. This dynamic fitting process ensures that every aspect of the chair is refined and tailored to your individual needs before production begins.

Try, Adjust, Approve

As part of every made-to-measure sports or active wheelchair, RMA offers a unique second fitting service.

At this stage, the wheelchair is presented in a “tacked” format, allowing you to try it before completion and assess its fit and feel. Small adjustments can be made if required, ensuring the chair is tailored to your individual needs before final approval.

Once signed off, the wheelchair is completed and prepared for delivery. Including both fitting sessions, your made-to-measure wheelchair is typically delivered within 6–8 weeks.

A correctly fitting chair will MAXIMISE performance. With the CBM® System, individuals can experience an infinite range of adjustments, experiencing a truly custom fit. We also run non destructive tests for fatigue and stress.

The difference in an RMA Sport Made to Measure wheelchair is the FIT. A second fitting is included, allowing the individual an opportunity to try the fit and make any minor adjustments before the build is complete. After all, a truly tailored fit requires customer input.

The Contour Body Mapping® System is an essential part of our fitting process and sets us apart from other sport wheelchair manufacturers. This is a one of a kind technology developed by our team of engineers, with the notion that no two bodies are the same.

We use the very latest technology that includes Contour Body Mapping®, CAD design, Pressure Mapping, Laser Alignment, Tig Welding and CNC machinery. A standard build, from conception to completion takes between an impressive 6 to 8 weeks to deliver to the customer.

For us, designing a chair for an active lifestyle came in response to our made-to-measure rugby wheelchairs. Inspired by athletes, the Vida Active Wheelchair is an entirely bespoke wheelchair that the individual designs for their needs. After all, no two bodies are the same! Purposeful engineering gives the Vida distinctive features. Also, the customisation options extend well beyond colour selection.
